In the fall of 1966, a dream took root in the heart of Florence, Alabama. With a shared vision and a deep belief in the power of natural living, Robert (Bob) and Ora Lee Price left behind their home in Memphis, Tennessee, to start something new — a small health food store tucked along Seminary Street in downtown Florence.

At the time, the idea of “health foods” was still foreign to many. But Bob and Ora Lee saw beyond the trend — they saw a need. They envisioned a welcoming place where people could find honest products, sound advice, and a sense of community built around wellness. That little shop soon became more than a store; it became a trusted neighbor to many.

Just four years later, in 1970, their vision grew roots across the river. They opened a second location on Woodward Avenue in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, extending their commitment to helping others live well naturally. Both stores quickly became local staples — places where families came for vitamins, herbs, teas, and genuine care.

By November of 1976, the Florence store had outgrown its first home and was moved to 117 South Cherry Street, into what had once been the historic Parrish Cigar and Candy Company building. The new space, filled with warm light and the aroma of natural herbs and spices, soon became the heart of downtown Florence’s wellness community — a space where Bob and Ora Lee’s dream continued to flourish.

As the years passed, so did the generations who carried that dream forward. In January 2000, a new chapter began. After two decades of dedication, Sid and Teresa Thornton — who had worked side by side with Bob and Ora Lee for nearly 20 years — became partners in the business. That same year, the Muscle Shoals store was expanded, marking both growth and transition as Bob and Ora Lee retired, passing their legacy into trusted hands.

The Thornton family carried the torch with the same passion and integrity that had guided the Prices. And in 2013, Sid and Teresa officially became the full owners of Valley Health Foods. Their leadership didn’t just maintain the store’s heritage — it deepened it, blending years of experience with fresh energy and vision.

Today, Valley Health Foods remains a true family business, with Sid and Teresa working alongside their daughter, Samantha, and Cecille Thornton, Sid’s wife. Together, they continue to serve the Florence and Muscle Shoals communities with the same warmth, honesty, and dedication that began in that small storefront over half a century ago.

What started in 1966 as a single shop on Seminary Street has grown into a Shoals-area tradition — a living legacy built on family, faith, and a love for helping others live well the natural way.
